Arriving at Colchester Theory Test Centre

By public transport

Even if you’re not from Colchester, getting to the test centre on time doesn’t need to be a mission. Those travelling by train should get off at Hythe (Essex), which is the closest station. From here it will be a 17-minute walk to the theory test centre.

Taking the bus instead? No problem. Get off at the University bus stop and it’s just a hop, skip and a jump (or 2-minute walk) to your theory test.

To learn more about Colchester’s transport options, consult the Visit Colchester website.

By car

For those who prefer to travel by car, the journey should be fairly straightforward. To (hopefully) skip any confusion, just type CO4 3ZL into a sat nav and follow the instructions.

Parking

Unless you’re getting a taxi, it’s likely you’ll be hoping to nab a parking spot at or near the test centre. Sadly, the test centre itself does not provide on-site parking.

Sadly, there aren't many parking options around. The closest option is at B&Q, which is a 16-minute walk away. The only other feasible option would be to park at Tesco, which is slightly further away at a 23-minute walk.

Parking is free, but you do need to be a customer at both stores in order to park up, so maybe your family member/friend could pop into Tesco for some celebratory food and drinks whilst they wait.

Pass Rates by Year

Colchester theory test centre hasn’t been up and running for very long, so we don’t have a lot of data to provide. Nevertheless, the pass rates they do have sit above the national average, so if you’re the sort of person who cares about statistics, this should put your mind at ease. It’s still important to remember that the location you choose doesn’t really affect how well you do in the test. Results are all down to preparation and personal skill!

Guides and Tips

If you don’t fancy having to take multiple attempts at the theory test, make sure you leave plenty of time for revision. Don’t think that just because it’s multiple choice it will be easy to pass—it’s important that you really know your stuff on test day. The George Hotel ★★★☆☆

This is a fantastic hotel steeped in local history. It was once a medieval coaching inn and the ancient cellars are still in good nick and well worth a look! Don’t worry, though—when it comes to the rooms, the decor is up to date and everything is fresh, clean and comfortable. You’ll find it a quick 12-minute drive from the test centre.

North Hill Hotel ★★★☆☆

North Hill Hotel is simple, sleek and stylish. Despite its very reasonable price tag, guests still get to enjoy top-class service and a highly enjoyable stay. There are only 24 rooms available, so if this place tickles your fancy you’ll need to book in early!

Blue Ivy Hotel ★★★★☆

Did you know that Beyoncé and Jay Z’s daughter is in the boutique hotel business? Neither did we, but we’re very impressed with her work. The whole place is decked out in luxury vintage decor and during your stay you have access to free WiFi, complimentary breakfast and staff on hand 24/7 to serve any of your needs. This lovely little pub is mere yards from the test centre, so you don’t really have an excuse not to at least pop in! Once inside, you can take your pick from a huge range of ales, beers and wines (or a soft drink, if you’re driving) and relax in the company of some of the friendly locals.

Trotters Bar and Kitchen

This is a super popular local spot that’s frequented by locals and visitors alike. The atmosphere is more party than peaceful and there’s plenty of fun to be had if you’re in the right mood. There’s food on offer no matter the time of day—just be sure to beat the lunchtime rush if you don’t want to be waiting too long to satisfy your stomach!
