By car

Those who’ve managed to find someone nice enough to drive them to their test just need to remember the postcode S49 1HQ. With that info and the help of a sat nav, you should have no problem finding the test centre.

Parking

As per usual, the theory test centre does not provide parking. Don’t scrap your plans to get a lift just yet though. There are a few car parks nearby that offer reasonable rates and a good chance of an empty parking spot.

The closest option is Queen's Park North (S40 2NF), which is only 3 minutes away from the test centre and charges a very affordable £3 for 2 hours of parking. With 110 spaces available, you should have no trouble finding somewhere to park.

Pass Rates by Year

Chesterfield's pass rates seem to have improved a lot over the last couple of years but are now on the rise. They currently sit above the national average, which may be encouraging for some learners.

2015-16 2016-17 2017-18 2018-19 2019-20 2020-21 2021-22
48.2% 48.2% 49.3% 46.2% 46.7% 58.3% 53.4%

In actual fact, the stats don’t mean that much for individual learners. Doing well on the big day will really be down to the work that you put in.

Hotels

Don’t show up to your theory test half-asleep and frazzled from all of the traffic you’ve had to navigate. If Chesterfield isn’t your hometown, it might be an idea to stay in a local hotel the night before your test. At least then you can be fresh, alert and ready to ace the test in the morning! Here are some options close to the test centre:

ibis Chesterfield Centre ★★☆☆☆

Just under a 5-minute drive away from the test centre, you’ll find this handy branch of the ibis hotel chain. Along with free WiFi and a clean, comfortable room, you also have the option of free on-site parking—great if you’ve driven down to Chesterfield for the test. Stomach grumbling after all that last-minute revision? Just head over to Fogg’s restaurant on the ground floor, where you can enjoy a range of tasty dishes.

Stephenson Tea and Coffee House Luxury Bed and Breakfast ★★★☆☆

Right around the corner from Chesterfield’s famous crooked spire, sits this delightful little coffee shop that doubles as a luxury B&B. When you’re done stuffing your face with the delicious treats baked downstairs, you can make your way to one of the three lodging rooms upstairs. Each one is unique, tastefully decorated and perfect for a long, relaxing kip.

The Portland Hotel ★★★☆☆

What’s better than a Wetherspoons pub? A Wetherspoons pub that is also a hotel! Yes, The Portland Hotel combines your favourite drinking hole with a great place to crash for the night. Each room is ensuite, with free WiFi and your very own Freeview TV. Best of all, it’s only a 9-minute walk from here to your theory test!

Places to Celebrate

Once the time is up on your theory test, it’s time to let your hair down with a celebratory drink! Seriously, even if you didn’t manage to pass first time, you probably deserve a refreshment of some kind. Before rushing off home, why not see what the town of Chesterfield has to offer? We’ve listed some of our recommendations below.

Einstein’s

A short drive from the test centre and you’ll stumble upon Einstein’s. This enticing Bavarian beer house and cocktail bar serves up something for everyone. Classic ales, inspired tipples and top quality grub. They describe their food as ‘genius’ and, after a peruse of the menu, you’ll probably agree!

Coco Bar Bistro

In the opposite direction of Einstein’s sits a lovely tapas bistro known as Coco Bar. A mix of both Spanish and British dishes adorn the intriguing menu, so we’d advise trying out a few options in order to get a real feel for the place. Wash it down with some refreshing fizz and you’ll leave a happy camper!

The Market Pub

Sometimes you just fancy a traditional British pub, and The Market Pub on Beetwell Street really fits the bill. Steeped in historical charm, it’s an ideal place to settle down with a pint and relax after a busy day. Even if beer isn’t your thing, The Market Pub has an impressive selection of fine wines and gins on offer. Once the drinks have whetted your appetite, move on to the food menu of tasty British fare!
