A Bit More About South Shields

If South Shields is your test centre of choice, it makes sense to get acquainted with the local area. After all, your test route will take you around all the trickiest road features in the vicinity, starting with the A185 close to the test centre. The examiner is also likely to test your skills at entering and leaving roundabouts by taking you along the A19, which has plenty up its sleeve. Things will eventually slow down once the examiner takes you around one of the quieter residential estates—this is where you’ll have to demonstrate one of the driving test manoeuvres.

South Shields Test Route

No matter which test centre you visit, you won’t be able to get your hands on your actual test route. Whilst this might be disappointing to hear, you’re actually better off for it. After all, if you can get through an unpredictable route during your test, then you can face anything that comes your way once you’ve qualified! If you don’t fancy going in completely unprepared, however, we’d suggest watching videos of South Shields test routes on YouTube or downloading our sample South Shields driving test routes.

South Shields Test Pass Rates

Surrounded by fully qualified drivers who happened to have passed with zero minors? Then you’re probably itching to figure out what your chances are. Fortunately, you’ve come to the right place! Learner drivers in the UK currently have a 45.9% chance of passing their driving test. More interested in how learners at South Shields test centre fare? Check out its pass rates from the last five years in the table below…

2015-16 2016-17 2017-18 2018-19 2019-20

Though South Shields’ above-average pass rates certainly come as welcome news, it’s important not to put too much stock in them. The examiner won’t just pass you because you’re at a test centre with a high pass rate! It all comes down to how well you perform on the day itself.

What If I Can’t Go To South Shields?

Decided South Shields is no longer a good fit for you? Fortunately, Tyne and Wear has plenty of driving test centres that you can head to. If you’re looking to stick close to South Shields, your closest alternative is Sunderland.

What To Expect On The Day

Once you’ve reached the end of your driving lessons, you’ll finally have the skills needed to take the driving test—even if you might not quite feel ready yet!

On the day of your practical, make sure you have your provisional licence. The driving examiner will ask to see it before you start the test—if you don’t have it, they’ll cancel the test and you won’t get a refund. You’ll also want to get to South Shields test centre 10 minutes before your test is supposed to start.

Your driving test will consist of:

  • An eyesight test, where you’ll need to read a number plate from a distance of 20 metres
  • Two “show me, tell me” questions covering vehicle safety and maintenance
  • Twenty minutes of general driving, where you’ll be guided by the examiner, and will also need to perform one of the following manoeuvres:
  • Twenty minutes of independent driving, during which you’ll either follow sat nav directions or sign posts to reach a set destination

Your test route will eventually loop back around to South Shields test centre. Once you get there, the examiner will get you to park up. They will then take some time to finish totting up your faults before telling you your result. You’ll be able to get a better look at what faults you accumulated with the physical feedback sheet you get at the end. Alternatively, the examiner may send you your feedback by email using the driving test app.

But What If I Fail?

Though it might not feel like it at the time, failing your driving test can be beneficial. For many learners, the test can be a nerve-wracking experience—mostly because it’s something unfamiliar. Once you’ve gotten it out of the way, however, it’s no longer mysterious or scary. By the time you head in for your next attempt, it will seem like a breeze. Of course, if your confidence has been shaken, you might find it useful to take a refresher course before you go in for another test.
