How To Get There

Loughton test centre is based near the city centre and one of the busiest high streets in the area, on the aptly named High Road. With it being on the doorstep of the A121, and mere minutes from the M11, learners don’t have to worry about getting to Loughton test centre—it couldn’t be easier! If you’ve not had the time to look around the centre just yet, simply use these directions.

A Bit More About Loughton

At first, you might not think that Loughton test centre is a good location for practical tests, especially with it being based on the High Road (A121) which almost guarantees hectic road conditions for most of the day. And yet, that’s exactly why Loughton was placed there. Practical tests are designed to be challenging for learners. However, this is what your driving lessons will have prepared you for—from A roads to town roads to residential streets, you should be more than ready to tackle the roads around Loughton. For more general information about the area, look at the resources below.

Loughton Test Route

Although test routes are no longer published by the DVSA, there’s still plenty of ways in which you can get a rough idea of what will be expected of you on your big day. We’d recommend watching videos of Loughton driving test routes on YouTube or downloading our sample Loughton driving test routes. If you’re learning with a DVSA-approved instructor, it’s likely that they’ll introduce you to these roads in your lessons, enabling you to familiarise yourself with them before your practical.

Loughton Test Pass Rates

Pass rates have been an area of interest for PassMeFast learners since we started in Greater Manchester. That’s why we made sure to create our very own compilation of driving test pass rates. By doing so, we found that the national average pass rate in the UK stands at 45.9%. Those based in the East of England, in comparison, have a 46.3% chance of passing. Wondering how learners at Loughton test centre fared? Check out pass rates from the last five years below…

2015-16 2016-17 2017-18 2018-19 2019-20
45.8% 45.5% 45.3% 45.0% 44.0%

All in all, Loughton’s pass rates haven’t been too bad in recent years. Whilst they’re lower than the national average, it’s not by much. It’s vital that you don’t place too much importance on pass rates—it’s not like you’d have a guaranteed pass at a test centre with the highest pass rate in the UK anyway. Just keep practicing with your instructor and family and you’ll be just fine.

What If I Can’t Go To Loughton?

Loughton test centre isn’t the only test centre available in the Essex area. If you’ve decided to tackle your driving test elsewhere, or you’re just hedging your bets, the nearest alternatives are Brentwood and Chelmsford.

What To Expect On The Day

Before you know it, your practical test date will have arrived—even if it feels like it was just yesterday when you had your first driving lesson. Despite what you might have heard from the many driving test myths that circulate the learner driver community, the practical test is pretty darn simple. This doesn’t mean that it won’t be a challenge, but it does mean that the format won’t change no matter which centre you take it at.

On the day of your test, you need to get to Loughton test centre 10 minutes before your practical is due to start. Before you leave your house, make sure you’ve got your provisional licence or your test won’t go ahead. The test will then follow this format:

  • An eyesight test, where you’ll need to read a number plate from a distance of 20 metres
  • Two “show me, tell me” questions covering vehicle safety and maintenance
  • Twenty minutes of general driving, where you’ll be guided by the examiner, and will also need to perform one of the following manoeuvres:
  • Twenty minutes of independent driving, during which you’ll either follow sat nav directions or sign posts to reach a set destination

Your dreaded test will finally be over once you get back to Loughton test centre and park your car. The examiner will then let you know how you fared—giving you a feedback sheet that will break down all of your driving test faults and help you figure out which areas you need to work on (regardless of whether you pass or fail). If your hard work paid off and you are successful, you’ll also be given a test pass certificate—get ready to pose for your pass photo!

But What If I Fail?

Whilst it might not seem like it at the time, failing your driving test isn’t the worst thing to happen. Countless learner drivers fail their test—some even come away with a driving test horror story or two! Instead of taking a long break from driving, your best chances lie in getting back behind the wheel. Don’t brush over your mistakes, instead, look over your feedback sheet and see which areas you need to work on. If you feel like it might benefit you, you should take a refresher course to help you rebuild your confidence.
