How To Get There

Taking a sneak peek around Rothesay test centre before your driving instructor takes you around the area? Well, aren’t you eager? To avoid taking a detour, or ending up at the wrong place entirely, use these directions with a sat nav.

A Bit More About Rothesay

Your driving test will start out in the centre of Rothesay, which will likely be a challenge no matter what time of day it is—the roads are compact, and there’s a wide range of local businesses and tourist attractions. With the high likelihood of heavy road and foot traffic, you’ll need to make sure you’re making your observations frequently.

The driving examiner might take you up towards Port Bannatyne, or take you on a loop around Bute itself—starting near Craigmore, down the A844 towards Stranavan, before curving back towards Rothesay via Meikle Grenach. There’s no way of knowing for sure, of course, but as long as you’re comfortable with driving on rural roads, you should be more than ready to tackle your Rothesay test route!

What To Expect On The Day

Gotten to the end of your driving lessons, but don’t feel 100% ready? That’s perfectly normal! Plenty of learners suffer from a bad case of nerves on their big day, so don’t panic about it too much. If nerves are a big concern for you, just check out our guide on avoiding test day nerves, and our top relaxation tips!

On the day of your test, get to Rothesay test centre 10 minutes early with your provisional licence. Once you’ve parked the car, you’ll meet the examiner in the reception area. They’ll introduce themselves, ask to see your provisional and then get you to sign a form.

Your driving test will then consist of:

  • An eyesight test, where you’ll need to read a number plate from a distance of 20 metres
  • Two “show me, tell me” questions covering vehicle safety and maintenance
  • Twenty minutes of general driving, where you’ll be guided by the examiner, and will also need to perform one of the following manoeuvres:
  • Twenty minutes of independent driving, during which you’ll either follow sat nav directions or sign posts to reach a set destination
